Le bit est une unité de numération binaire (0 ou 1) utilisée pour le codage informatique de caractères (lettres, chiffres, ponctuation, symboles), par exemple l’ASCII (American standard code for information interchange). Un ensemble de 8 bits forme un octet. Le kilobit (Kbit) est une unité de mesure équivalant à 1.000 ou 1.024 bits. Le mégabit (Mbit) est une unité de mesure équivalant à un million de bits.
